Weekly Update Sept. 30-Oct. 4 September 30, 2013

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrsmarshallkd @ 12:04 am

Hello Parents!

Here is a brief summary for the week ahead:
Monday is Day 5 in the cycle.

We are still working with the word ‘can’, and will focus on the letter D. Our book of the week is “See What I Can Do”. In math we continue with our work with numbers 1-5. We have begun our Writers Workshop time, the class is really enjoying creating and writing books. I am sure you will be seeing some as they begin to bring them home.

We will make another attempt at our field trip this Wednesday. If it rains, then we will go on Friday. If you haven’t returned the second permission slip, please do so before Wednesday!

On Friday our “Artist In Residence” comes to visit again. We had a great time with movement and dance the last time, I am looking forward to her visit again.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Marshall

Hello parents! It’s hard to believe that September is almost over, school seems to have just started and we’re going into our second month! Crazy! We have had a great first month, and we all seem to be settling into our routines quite well. Here’s what’s happening this week:

Monday is Day 6. Library will be on Thursday (Day 3), please remind your child to return their library book by that day.

We are learning about our 5 Senses and will be doing some activities around our sense of touch. We will be reading the big book, “My 5 Senses” during our Shared Reading Time. In math we will be talking about more, fewer, and the same as.

We will begin our letter work this week, focussing on the letter F. We will also begin our sight word work, learning the word “can”. It’s always exciting when we begin this phase in kindergarten, because so much of what we are doing is laying the foundation for our writing and reading.

Our classroom arrangement continues to evolve, and I am re-vamping our sand table/science area. I am excited to see how it turns out. I am hoping it will reflect our Island beaches a bit more so I am including rocks and driftwood. I am also bringing in some starfish that I found at the beach. It will be interesting to observe them over the next few days.

Here’s what else is happening this week:
Tuesday- Class pictures. If you haven’t returned the picture form, please make sure it comes back by Tuesday. If there is no form, the photographers will choose the pose for your child.

Wednesday- FIELD TRIP! We are leaving by 9:00 and will be returning before lunch. We will be having our snack at the park.

Friday- The annual Terry Fox walk/run. Kindergarten will be participating in this at 1:55. We will be walking on the path that goes around the front playground.

Last week our Artist in Residence was in the classroom to give us a great introduction to dance. I will try to post some of the photo’s later this week. We are looking forward to her coming again and introduce us to some more dances.

Here’s to a great week!

Hello Parents! I have noticed how many of you have signed up for the blog, if you know of a parent in our class that hasn’t signed up, please encourage them to do so! This initial post may be a bit longer than most others, but I will try to keep it as concise as possible!

First of all- information from Meet the Teacher Night

Safe Arrival: Please make sure your child is at school by 8:30. If they will be late or absent, please phone the school (569-0550 ext. 300) to let them know. If you would like to send me an e-mail, that would be great, but a phone call to the school is a must! If you are dropping your child off late, or picking them up early, please check in at the office. If you are dropping them off at the regular time, please drop them off in the lobby. They will be able to make their way down to the classroom from there.

Daily Routines:                                                                                                                                                                                         -We have gym on days 1,3,5 and music on days 2,4,6, and Computer Lab on day 4. Please make sure your child has sneakers at school for the gym days. If they do not have proper shoes, they may not be allowed to participate in the class.

-A quick snack time is available first thing in the morning if the students are interested.   Our main snack time is at 10:50. Lunch is at 12:40.  First recess is 10:30-10:45 and second recess is 12:20-12:40.

-Independence: Please allow your child the opportunity to get themselves ready for the day, including putting on and taking off their own coats, etc. If they have tie shoes, please make sure they can tie them themselves. This is important for their own self-confidence. When they can take care of their own personal needs, they are more confident with their own abilities, which gives them confidence in their daily learning.

-If you have any issues or concerns, please let me know! E-mail is probably the simplest. If you would like to speak with me, you can either e-mail me to let me know, and I will phone you at the earliest moment, or you can phone the school between 2:45 and 3:30. I am usually there until 4, but I cannot guarantee that I will always be there until 4.

-Learning through play: We learn through play in Kindergarten. Whether it is in the block area, the kitchen area, or in the math area, my goal is to make learning fun, joyous, and meaningful, because that is when true learning happens. I try to balance active, hands on learning with group learning (both large and small groups). Play is an important part of my teaching, and I am passionate about it! If you have any questions, please let me know!

The Week Ahead:

We are focussing on “All About Me”. It is a great time of year to do this as we are getting to know each other. In Math we are going to begin looking at the numbers 1-5 focussing on 1:1 correspondence and using our 5 frames. In Science we will begin talking about our 5 Senses. We will also be spending time strengthening our Fine Motor muscles which will help us build our stamina when we begin writing.

We are beginning a new Artist in Residence program. This year the focus is on dance and we will have a special time set aside for her to come and work with our class. Maria Brychuk, our Artist in Residence, will be here next week in the mornings to begin her presentations with classes. The program is all about “Dance Awareness.”

Lions Club Fundraiser for Breakfast Program The Stratford Lions Club will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, September 28th. This is a fundraiser for our school breakfast program. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for children, and $18 for a family.

Remember there is No School on Friday, Sept.20 as it is a Professional Development day for the teachers.

Have a great week!
