Happy New Year! It was a great break, but I for one am glad to be back and be on a routine. It’s nice to look out of the window and see the snow falling too. Since it is definitely winter now, please remember to send your child with the proper outdoor gear: coat, hat, snow pants, mittens, boots. We go out every day unless it is over 20 below. Which means we are outside most days!
We are starting back to class hitting the ground running. This week we’ll talk about the letters G and T and the sight word me (we’ll keep this one from December. We’ll get a new sight word next week).
We’ll finish up patterns this week, and begin number sense 6-10 next week.
We had a lot of talk today about snow, where it comes from, what it looks like, etc. So for the next little bit we’ll be spending some time doing some snow activities. We’ll be looking at snowflakes, learning about how snow is made, reading stories about snow. It should be a lot of fun. And if all goes to plan (and we have snow still) we’ll go sledding on Jan. 29. We have enough crazy carpets for everyone and there is a small hill in the back of the school.
But the biggest news of all: Now that it is January, we will begin Guided Reading. It’s always an exciting time for the kids, their first in-school introduction to reading. I try to emphasize that we are just learning. I do not want your child to feel pressure or anxiety about this. It is a fun time and I want them to view reading as a fun and pleasurable activity. I will send more information home when we are ready to begin bringing books home for homework.
Today is day 3 in the cycle. If your child had a library book over the holidays, please return them as soon as you can. Thanks!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!
Here’s to 2016- May this be one of the best years!
