what's happening in kd

September 30-October 4 September 29, 2019

Hey parents! Getting ready for our first week in October, and there is a lot going on!

Fundations begins in full this week. Please be looking in your child’s homework bag for this weeks lesson emphasis. Please know that these letters are for you to help your child. I do not expect them to be returned to school, as a matter of fact, they will be very useful as the year progresses. It might be a good idea to find a binder to put all of the letter sheets in so that your child can refer to them at home if needed.

In Math we are continuing on with number sense to 5. This includes learning counting rules, subitizing (seeing a group at a glance and knowing how many are there), and counting on (starting at a number other than 1 and counting to 5 or 10).

In Writing we are emphasizing the idea that pictures help tell our stories, so we are creating our own picture books.

We are also learning the trick words: the, see

I am hoping to get out for a nature walk this week, it all depends on the weather!

Items to note:

Monday is Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day—September 30th, is a day to honour residential school survivors and their families and reflect on the residential school system in Canada.

Monday is also the first Home and School meeting of the year.

Friday is Walk to School Day- students and parents can meet at the Town Hall at 7:45 to walk to school together.

Monday is Day 4 in the cycle

Here’s to another great week!

The last full week of September, and you’d think the class had been here for a year! It’s been a great 3 weeks, we have spent a lot of time preparing for right now- we have learned our morning routines, we have learned where we go for music and gym, we have learned about working in our little classroom community, and we have mastered the bus. Time to get down to “business” so to speak!

In literacy, we have begun learning some “trick words”. Last week it was the word the, this week it is the word see. We have begun Fundations, and there is a very important note in your child’s homework bag explaining what Fundations is and what will help your child have the most success. We have begun “writing” by using pictures to tell our stories.

In Math we are learning about the different ways to count. We are also learning about our Five Senses and about colours.

Just a reminder that there is no school on Friday as it is a PD day for teachers. Some other notes to remember:

Thanks to all who came out for Meet the Teacher night. I sent home a copy of the overall notes from the evening for those who missed it. It was brought to my attention that I didn’t have my email on the letter, oops! Here it is:

cmmarshall@edu.pe.ca

If you need to get ahold of me, this is the easiest way. If you would like to speak to me, just send me an email telling me you’d like to give you a call and I will get back to you as soon as I can!

We have been spending time working on our fine motor development. Last week we focused on our pencil/crayon grip as well as eye-hand coordination. This week we will be working on scissor skills! We will begin Fundations in the next few weeks.

In math we have been doing an overview of numbers 1-10, as well as creating a 1-10 number line. After this, we will begin exploring different ways to count to 10.

We will begin our five senses study this week. We are also reviewing letters and the differences between letters, numbers, and words.

Some reminders:

  • Picture Day is Monday! We usually get ours taken before first recess.
  • Regarding drop off/pick up:
        1. Parents who are picking up their children after school, must do so in the lobby.  Parents are not permitted in the bus loop and cannot pick their children up in this area.
        1. Parents who are dropping their children off in the morning, please let them out of their cars close to the metal barriers near the exit area of the drop off loop.
        2. Parents are not permitted to enter the staff parking areas.
        3. There will be no bus notes given to students to support after school playdates or recreational activities.  Our buses are full and cannot accommodate these requests.
  • Our hot lunch program will start on Monday the 16th
  • Wednesday afternoon will be our bus evacuation drill. The class has been doing great with our fire drills, by the way.

I think that’s it for the week! Have a great one, and if you need anything, please let me know!
